My name is David Watson and I’m currently a student at Washington State University. I’m majoring in fashion merchandising and after college I hope to find a job in clothing advertising. Growing up in Kirkland I faced a lot of adversity being one of the few black students in my high school. Out of the many things that I wish could have been changed in my time there, I would say the most significant is how people perceived and talked to me. I remember that at least once a week I’d be compared to what others believe is a stereotypical black person. I’d often be told that I’m the whitest black person they know or that I talk a lot different from “other black people.” Eventually I learned to deal with this and it made navigating through college easier.
